One job portal reported a nearly 40% rise in applications from individuals under 20 years old compared to the previous year, with retail, food and beverage, and logistics roles being the most sought-after. Among these teens, 17-year-old Rico Ng stands out for balancing school and work. Rico has been working part-time for the past two years to support his family while pursuing a business management diploma and working shifts at a tea chain. He works approximately 52 hours a month, often after school, and has found that the experience has significantly enhanced his interpersonal skills. Rico highlights the importance of teamwork and clear communication, especially during peak hours, which helps him communicate effectively with customers. Chagee, the tea chain, aims to cultivate these soft skills among its workforce, referring to both full- and part-time staff as 'partners'. This approach emphasizes their value beyond just being extra hands behind the counter. Mr. Jeremy Ma, head of operations at Chagee Singapore, believes that giving teenagers real responsibilities helps them grow with the brand. The desire for work experience is also evident on online job platforms. According to FastCo, applications from candidates aged under 20 jumped by about 40% in November compared to the same month last year. FastGig, FastCo's app, allows students to mix and match short-term roles during the holidays. Mr. Julian Tan, FastCo's founder and CEO, notes that younger workers increasingly prefer gig jobs for the variety they offer. This trend not only provides young workers with extra pocket money but also gives them a head start in their careers, helping them develop time management and other essential skills.
