Harry Cobden is set to embark on a new chapter in his illustrious career, as he will be riding as a retained jockey for JP McManus from the upcoming season. This move presents a unique opportunity for Cobden, who is eager to showcase his skills and make a lasting impact in the world of horse racing.
The role will encompass a diverse range of horses, including the reigning Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Inothewayurthinkin, the Ryanair Chase winner Fact To File, and the Unibet Champion Hurdle contender The New Lion. Additionally, Cobden will be riding Jonbon, a top two-mile chaser, further highlighting the breadth of his responsibilities.
In an interview with Sky Sports Racing, Cobden expressed his excitement about the prospect, stating, 'It's a massive opportunity for next season, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.' He emphasized the honor of being asked to join McManus' stable, acknowledging the quality of the horses under his care.
Cobden's decision to join McManus was influenced by the opportunity to ride the McManus horses in Ireland, where the majority of the 'green and gold' horses are based. He appreciates the depth of talent and the potential for success in this new role.
Before embarking on this new journey, Cobden is determined to conclude his tenure as stable jockey to Paul Nicholls on a high note. He has had a remarkable ten-year run with Nicholls, and he is grateful for the support and opportunities provided. Cobden acknowledges that his success is intertwined with Nicholls' guidance and the backing of his owners.
'I’ve really only had one job in racing and that’s with Paul. I wouldn’t be where I am now without him. The support I’ve had from him and his owners has been unbelievable. Without them, an opportunity like this would never have come along because nobody would know who I am,' Cobden reflected.
Cobden extends his gratitude to Nicholls and his team, recognizing their invaluable contributions to his career. He is optimistic about continuing to ride winners for Nicholls, even as he embraces the new challenges ahead.
Barry Geraghty, McManus' previous retained rider, retired six years ago. Geraghty believes that Cobden is well-suited for the role, praising the depth of talent within McManus' stable. He highlights the presence of last season's Gold Cup and Ryanair winners, as well as The New Lion and Jonbon, among other top horses.
Geraghty recalls the opportunity to work for McManus as an honor, emphasizing the quality of the horses and the potential for success. He acknowledges the internal pressure that comes with such a significant role but believes that Cobden's capabilities and riding style will be a perfect fit for McManus' preferences.
'Harry is a very good rider and I think he is the right type of person to ride for JP. He rides a patient race and JP would rather his horses were ridden patiently than aggressively, so his style should be well suited to the job. He rides well over fences and hurdles and is a good horseman. Like Mark Walsh, he’s a good all-rounder,' Geraghty commented.
Geraghty also highlights the success of Mark Walsh, who has achieved numerous victories for McManus, including the Gold Cup and Ryanair winner last season. He acknowledges the internal pressure that comes with such a significant role but believes that Cobden's adaptability and riding prowess will enable him to thrive in this new chapter of his career.
