Ghana's Cardiothoracic Surgeons Unite: Collaboration for Better Healthcare (2026)

A pressing issue in Ghana's healthcare landscape is the dire need for collaboration and resource sharing among cardiothoracic centres. With a scarce number of specialists, Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre, calls for a united front to enhance patient care and improve service delivery.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons, Dr. Entsua-Mensah highlighted the urgent need to increase the number of cardiothoracic surgeons across the regions. "We are only 14 in the entire country, and it's time to scale up training and boost our workforce," he emphasized.

The newly formed society aims to engage in training and influence national policy, with a focus on capacity building and expanding existing facilities. Dr. Entsua-Mensah noted that the society currently has 14 qualified surgeons and six trainees, with plans to increase these numbers and deploy them across Ghana's regions.

"Currently, we have five hospitals with cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, but we recognize that collaboration is key to achieving more," he added.

Dr. Entsua-Mensah suggested expanding centres at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, 37 Military Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital to ease the burden on the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu. He encouraged better-resourced centres in Accra to support less developed ones, while also advocating for the establishment of regional cardiovascular and thoracic centres to reduce travel distances for patients.

"Our goal is to bring our services closer to the people, not just by developing centres in Accra, but also in Kumasi and Tamale, and eventually across the country," he explained.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and pioneer of the Korle Bu Centre, emphasized the importance of embracing technology and modern procedures to deliver quality care. He called for increased investment in facilities and equipment and urged professionals to maintain high standards and support the society's objectives.

The inaugural meeting, themed "Capacity Building in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Through Partnership," highlighted the critical need for collaboration and resource sharing to improve Ghana's healthcare system.

What are your thoughts on this pressing issue? Do you think collaboration and resource sharing can make a significant impact on healthcare delivery in Ghana? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments!
