Snowfall Alert: Devon and Beyond
The UK, including Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset, might soon be blanketed in snow, according to weather maps. WXCharts predicts that this wintry weather will hit the southwest of England at midnight on February 15, then move eastward along the south coast, reaching London and the Midlands by 6 pm on the same day. South Wales is also expected to experience snowfall.
The maps indicate that snow depths could reach up to 10cm. In a separate forecast, the Met Office predicts 'predominantly cyclonic patterns' across Britain from February 11 to March 5. Experts suggest that the early part of this period could see colder conditions, increasing the likelihood of snow.
However, milder and wetter weather may persist in the far south. By the end of the period, the track of Atlantic depressions is expected to shift slightly further north, resulting in broadly unsettled weather with further spells of rain and possibly strong winds.
The Met Office emphasizes that when predicting snowfall, meteorologists consider three key factors: the origin of the air mass, the intensity of precipitation, and the interaction between warm and cold air. If air has come from a warmer area or spent time over mild water, it's harder to generate snow. Conversely, if it's coming from a cold region, often the north, there's a chance of snow.
Weather specialists note that most precipitation starts as snow or 'supercooled' raindrops within clouds, but typically melts en route to the surface. In winter, intense precipitation can keep temperatures lower closer to the ground, increasing the chance of heavy rainfall turning into snow.
